Probably Jerry. He is the control that allows all the others to seem so wacky. He also delivers some of the cleverest and most sarcastic punch lines.
His role was portrayed most clearly in "The Opposite" episode, where his friends are having drastic successes and failures, and Jerry always seems to break even.
Without Jerry character, the show never could have functioned. This of course, is not even mentioning the brilliance of Jerry behind the scenes.
