Why do cartoon characters have only 4 digits?!

Question: 3 fingers and 1 thumb.

Answers: 3 fingers and 1 thumb.

I agree with most of the people that are actually putting the effort of answerring this question of yours. That is that most of the time to get the proportions of the body to be correct for the character, it is drawn with only 4 digits. It also has to do with drawing the character over and over again that the last digit isn't drawn. Though this mainly happens in the USA's cartoons, at least that is what I can gather. And the for some cartoons that the main characters are not all that human to begin with (like mickey mouse and his companions, spongebob, and those kinds of characters) basically it is the creators choice to make those characters that way, it is just the style they chose for them. Hope that helps and makes any sense.

Alien species in a 2 dimensional universe.

Try drawing one with 5 digits and still make it look like a cartoon.

It's easier to draw apparently.

Easier to draw.

Depends on the cartoon. Fred Flintstone only had 3 toes. However, when you start looking at the more detailed Japanimation, you'll find more digits. Maybe Asians draw better than Joseph Hannah or William Barbera?

Millennium bug compliance

They gave the finger to Walt Disney

Try to draw a small hand with 5 fingers (the size of homer on the tv) and you will notice it looks wrong (alien like), its hard to draw and makes the hand look out of proportion.

4 digits makes it easier to draw and gives the right image.

Cartoons flip exceptional "birds." You just feel more violated when it comes from Tweety Bird, or Goofy, or SpongeBob.

to stop their hands looking like a bunch of bananas.

Easier to animate

The four-finger style is mainly an American convention. In Japan, missing fingers are seen as evidence of a menial job, so people are commonly drawn with the standard handful.

This is a very old convention in the comics, almost as old as comics itself, the fact is that it is simply easier to draw four finger instead of five. Cartoon charcters have always been very stylised, and simplified to faster drawing.
