What is better, "Ultimate Spider-Man" or "the Amazing Spider-Man?!
Question: i was thinking of picking up either Ultimate Spider-Man or the Amazing Spider-Man.

This is one of those "apples vs. oranges" questions. It depends entirely upon personal taste.
The 'Amazing' version has the advantage of having been around for over a generation, with a solid, if convoluted back-story, as well as having been sufficiently popular to inspire the 'spin-off'.
The 'Ultimate' version has the advantage of being relatively recent, and easily accessible, as well as being set in the relative present, so that it doesn't need to deal with Peter Parker having been in high school during the Kennedy administration.
'Amazing' has got the disadvantage of a lo-oonng story line, constructed by multiple writers not always on the same page. I haven't been following closely for *years* (once you've said Steve Ditko, Roger Stern & Peter David, I think that you should quit while you're ahead), but didn't Aunt May die twice, now? And please, let's not even *mention* the 'Spider-Clone' stories...*please*!
'Ultimate' has the dis-advantage of merely being a knock-off.
In the end, "you pays your money & you makes your choices". Why not pick up two or three consecutive issues of each & decide for yourself?

ultimate spiderman was definitely better but amazing spiderman was still good to read. i enjoy reading many of those comics.
Amazing Spiderman
You are comparing two different stories, so it is completly based on your opinion, and here's mine: i love both comics but I think Ultimate is more for kids 10-14, while while Amazing is more for teenagers 13 - up. Both storylines are awesome, and I personally like Amazing Spider-man better. Just to help you decide, here's what's going on in both comics:
Ultimate Spider-man: It looks like Liz, MJ's friend, found out she has superpowers and it's going to team up with spider-man and iceman to fight magneto (spiderman-fire star-iceman)
Amazing Spider-man: To save his aunt, peter parker gave up his marriage in a deal with Mephisto. Now Spiderman is currently single and he's fighting a crime lord (negative man) who wants to kill some rich people and have his partner inherit the money (he's a relative to that rich family).
