"Death Note" fans - whats the appeal of the show?!

Question: So far, I've watched three episodes (on CartoonNetwork), which have been all talking about plot and 'Kira' and absolutely no action. At this point, I'm not planning on watching a fourth - but maybe the fans of this show could talk about what they like, and that might get me to stick with it. I'm curious, what do you like about the show?

The plotline, the characters...sheer brilliance. The psychological game of cat and mouse, and the question of morality brought into it is wonderful. There are so many twists and turns throughout the story. It's so layered--a mystery story with a twist. Logic integrated so cleverly into the storyline, keeping you wondering what L or Light's next move will be or how they'll keep themselves from being cornered. Death Note is incredibly unique. I absolutely adored that series. The beginning might be a little slow to some people, but it is definitely worth it. Remember, it's not action.

Probably one of the best series I have ever watched/read.

I suggest watching the subbed version--For some reason, I prefer the original voices. I personally thought that the original voices seemed more fitting.

i've only seen the first episode... interesting topic, but it almost seems like the kid is playing god, in the sense that he's controlling people fate as to whether or not to live.

The almost genius story line.

it's my favorite. go to youtube and watch the first episodes and you'll like it better. it's really interletural and just amazing

Welcome to the whole wide world of anime! Where not every single series focuses or even has action in it! Romance, comedy, psychological, slice of life, etc... etc... There are whole legions of different types of anime out there.

Death Note is a fantastic anime- but it is NOT OF THE ACTION GENRE. What makes it special is the psycological battle and manipulation, it's social commentary, the important questions it brings up, and the simple fact that there is an ALL OUT BATTLE with no definitive good guy.

Who are you for? Who is correct?

Is it Light? Should we increase the punishment on criminals to stamp out crime?

Or is it L? Are people guaranteed certain rights, and deserve sincere treatment even when accused of a crime?

Things like this make Death Note a fantastic show to watch. But- if you can't handle such thought provoking questions, go back to your "action" Naruto and Bleach. They should keep you entertained I guess...

Well, it's not really supposed to be the actiony type of anime, like InuYasha. It's more like mystery-suspense. I love the genius of Light and L (Riyuzaki), and the humor of Ryuk. Plus, L rocks, in his weird sort of way.

~EDIT~
OMG, I looooove Mat's answer!

ahh... u'll regret it if u missed that episode... death note is a great anime...

but for me, after L died in that anime, the storyline is quite boring...

death note is more of a psycological anime rather than an action anime. its so appealing because the storyline is genius. i liked it alot because it got me thinking about alot of things...such as humanity and all that stuff. When i first heard of it i thought it was going to be really bad but then i tried it and i think its better than anything i've ever seen, its really interesting. if you like to watch something that makes u think then watch it.

well
