Question: What's the difference between an Espada and an Arrancar? are they the same thing or no?

Also how come the captains in souls society already know about the Arrancars/Espads if Aizen created them afterward?How can they know about them?

espadas are the same as arrancars, but espadas are higher in terms power and ranks.

i'm guessing their science department knew about this, because of mayuri. also, this could be possible, because urahara also knows a lot about the hougyoku, because he was the former head of that department.
soul society knew bout espada cuz they attacked Ichigo first and introduce themselves as espada. of corse it's related to hougyouko too. i think u picked the wrong answer Report It

    • Um, I'm no Bleach expert. In fact, I'm technically right after Aizen dies in the manga, but from the spoilers my friends tell me, this is what I've got.

    The Espada is just a fighting force made up of people like Ulquiorra and Yammy, etc that fight for Gin, Aizen, etc. Arrancar are a species like shinagami and Hallows.

    Espada is the group of the most powerful arrancars. They are made up of 10 members. The privaron espada are the arrancars who made it once in the top ten but has already been replaced. So, this means that Espada is a group of elite arrancars. Arrancars are hollows who took the form of humans and possesses great strength and spiritual force.
    Espada are like the strongest arrancars.
    Espada numbers are 001 - 010
    Arrancar numbers are 011 - 099
    Privaron Espada are 100 - ??????

    repeating what others have said; all the hollows that have gained great reiatsu that they are able to break their masks and be in human forms are Arrancarus. Espadas are the top arrancarus in term of powers, and numbered by Aizen from 1-10.

    Uehara knows about the existance of arrancarus/espadas because he fought them when rescuing Ichigo from Yammy and Ulquiorra. Now, Yoruichi was there too. That's how Soul Society knew about the existance of arrancarus and then they send Hitsugaya to the real world to investigate further.
    Actually Arrancarus are not new. They are known in Soul Society as Vasto Lordes. These Vasto Lordes have human forms and a captain level shinigami may not be able to defeat one as they have never met one before ( as explained by Hitsugaya Toushirou). And after the incident with Aizen escaping to Hueco Mundo with Hougyouku, Soul Society could already guess his intentions. But their guess is confirmed after they meet the Vasto Lordes themselves who call themselves Espada (remember the episode/chapter when Toushiro and his assigned team go to real world as undercover students?) After that, the espada openly attack the gang as a diversion while Ulquiorra kindnaps Orihime.
    well i just watched an episode of bleach and it said that arrancar are soldiers while the espada are higher ranked
