Question: what do you prefer?

most of my girl friends who actually like anime only watch the shoujo/romance ones....

I'm a guy (if that's not obvious by the username, lol) and I enjoy watching comedy(like Ouran) and romance anime. Action anime aren't really my thing, although I have made several exceptions to that habit; I found Bleach to be interesting for a while, but its repetitiveness just bored me to death. I guess that you could call me an oddity? All of those psychological and deep anime simply get me confused, usually I like to separate my thinking from my anime watching, lol.
People who think that girls and guys should stick to their "types" of anime aren't too crazy, after all, they are the groups the shows were designed for. However, they shouldn't be too surprised when some anime fans switch over to the other "side" of anime.

I think it's gay how people just assume female anime fans go straight to romance. And, how they freak when a guy is atching it. Stupidity i tell you.

I love anime/manga in all its forms
So I watch everything/anything. To be honest, I don't have a favorite genre.
I think that people should watch whatever suits them, and if that means that I, as a girl, want to watch blood, gore, and action, then I will. Same goes for guys- watch whatever makes you happy.
lol, I agree, I know a lot of my friends who watch a mixture of both romance and gory animes. I enjoyed Ai Yori Aoshi and cried in the ending. I was bored of animes such as Bleach and Naruto. I occasionally watch animes such as Fruits Basket and InuYasha when I am bored of the action-packed ones.
My favorite are the comedy ones like Golden boy, School Rumble and Full Metal Panic

Anyways, I watch and enjoy ALL genres- as long as it is good Card Captor Sakura and Princess Tutu from magical girl. Kanon and Shuffle from harem. Seto no Hanayome and FLCL for comedy. Sola and Onegai Sensei for romance. Black Lagoon and Read or Die for action. Minami-ke and Azumanga Daioh for slice of life. Candy Boy and Blue Drop for yuri. Moyashimon for some yaoi...
I love it all- as long as it is good. But my favorite type of series are those that are original and really don't have anything to accurately compare it to. They stand out and are almost alone in their own genre. Those are really great anime. Like Kaiji, Kino's Journey, Kigeki, Shigofumi, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Mushishi, Battle Programmer Shirase- and I could go on.
Edit: Oh yeah, being a girl and liking action/horror/gore is not big deal. Two girls who live right next to me both love it. One is a diehard Berserk fan, and the other loves yandere characters and mecha. So you definitely aren't alone.

um i most watch romance comedy anime but i really like death note and it nots something i would ussually watch
I don't like violence/blood, the scariest thing I've seen is the last episode of School Days, and it took longer than usual for me to fall asleep after watching it. I'm too scared to watch horror, which is why I'll probably never watch Elfen Lied, Higurashi, Gantz, etc.
Drama/romance isn't my preference of anime either, I pretty much hated Peach Girl, Bokura ga Ita, and Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (though it's seinen not shoujo). Too much drama It's seems like a soap opera to me so I get bored.
I prefer seinen over shouen though, since some of the anime I've seen and I really like Code Geass, ef - a tale of memories, Doujin Work, Full Metal Panic (especially Fumoffu), Haruhi, etc.
People like what they like, I'm sure there's guys out there that like shoujo/romance and girls that like action/blood/shounen.
I guess if I had to choose between the two... I like the fluffy, flowery, shoujo stuff best. Ouran, Bokura ga Ita, Lovely Complex, and on and on and on. BUT, I also love the blood and violence...Hellsing, Elfen Lied, Monster, and so on. I can really get into either type. I know there are a lot of fans that stick with one or two genres, but I'll watch anything at all, as long as it's good. I wasn't always this way...when I first started out with anime, I would only watch certain genres. But I've been a serious fan for almost 11 years now, and over the years I've become completely open, and now I'll watch any genre.
My least favorite genre, by far, is mecha. I will watch it, but it had better be GREAT, or I'll drop it pretty quick. I have a soft spot for mahou shoujo, and shoujo and josei in general is something I usually really enjoy. But I'm also a HUGE lover of horror/mystery/psychological anime. It is so hard to find good ones, and I've gotten to the point where I feel like I've seen them all. I don't tend to enjoy marathon shounen action series...I've been watching Bleach since 2004, but more as a time-killer than anything else. I also really love slow, quiet slice-of-life series like ARIA - a lot of people find those boring, but I think they're great. I like romance as well, but only if it's exceptionally well-done. There are so many stupid, sappy, unrealistic romances out there! Comedy is another one I love love love...IF it's actually funny. A lot of so-called "comedy" anime have barely made me smile, let alone laugh. But when I find a truly funny one, I think, "Yes! Finally!"
So really, while there are genres that I prefer over others, I can enjoy anything as long as it's well-done. My favorite anime range from romance to fantasy to horror to action to slice-of-life, and absolutely everything in between. I think sticking to only a few genres, which I see so many people doing, is a sure way to miss out on a lot of great anime, and that's why I keep an open mind and will try almost any type.
What do I think about people who believe that guys and girls should stick to anime intended for their respective genders? I think, "Give me a break - this isn't the 1950s." Anyone can enjoy whatever they want to enjoy, and anyone who thinks differently is extremely sexist and narrow-minded. I have seen some of the bloodiest anime out there, and have enjoyed it just as much as the fluffiest shoujo you can think of.

damn! you caught me, i ocasionally read friuts basket for some reason probally because my sister gave me a manga of it. i think because romance in guys minds (like mine) should only be in the real world and if we really wanted romantic we'd call our gilrfriend or get a girlfriend

i think that since i'm not hyprocritical or gay, or both, that it's just the japanses version of "men should work and woman should clean" thing except with anime.
and shonen, as in shonen jump, despite it's japenese translation used to have alot of romance in it (shocking right)

I love comedy and action. I'm a girl that absolutely loves an anime with gore and much action. Maybe that's why Bleach is high up on my list.

I'm a shounen fan, I like the action, horror and psychological ones, I don't mind watching berserk which is full of violence and blood everywhere, I don't mind watching Death Note either, I guess it's enough that it's one of my favourite anime...
and for those who think the girls should stick with shojo and guys with shounen, they need to cut the crap, everyone has his own choice and those have no right to tell what to watch and what not!

About the last question, I think that girls should not only stick to shoujo and guys to shounen because of they can watch what they like, prefer and their type... and also for experiencing a broader world anime!!! Free to watch!
