Can somebody please enlighten me about anime...?!

Question: It makes me amaze that most characters on anime got big eyes instead of "slightly half close eyes or Japanese eyes" though most of it was created by the Japanese.

I once watch the Japanese anime "Akazukin Cha Cha" a few years back (actually my favorite cartoon that time).

No, it's not some kind of Asian inferiority complex, and actually, not quite all anime has the big eye style. But, most of it does, and the fact of the matter is that no one is 100% sure why.

However, the first person to use that style is usually credited as Tezuka Osamu, the creator of the old Astro Boy TV series among various other very popular TV shows that became the foundation for Japan's entire animation and comic industry. As to where Tezuka got the idea, Fred Ladd, who worked with him, has said (as in this Akadot interview) that he said he was emulating Betty Boop, who was popular in Japan at the time.

Other early US-produced animated characters that predate the anime style also have very large eyes (if you look, Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse have huge eyes).

The eyes also no doubt relate to the simple fact that humans find big eyes cute (small children have proportionally bigger eyes, compared to adults). In any case, the animated TV series created by Tezuka were very popular, and the style stuck. It has been altered and adapted over the ages, but the eyes have remained roughly the same.

I've also heard another reason for the size of the eyes summed up by the old expression "eyes are windows to the soul."

The Japanese (and by extrapolation Japanese Animation) are very interested in emotion, and what better way to express emotion than through... well, really huge eyes.

its the way of manga it so cool naruto is the best trust me awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

Anime characters pretty much have the OPPOSITE of actual Japanese features.

There'll be huge eyes, blonds/redheads/brunettes, and girls will have porn star style breasts.

I find it sort of hypocritical for all the national pride they toot, but that's just me.

well for alot of the characters that are shown tend to be japanese but look more like white people like Ichigo and Orhime"sorry for spelling"

They're trying to appeal to a wider audience, not just their Asian populous, they don't want to make it racially exclusive so the non-asian viewers would feel left out.
With this strategy they blur the racial boundaries because anime characters don't really look like any one exclusive race (nobody has eyes that huge).

And, of course as "Moo" above me says, the characters are very sexual. Why? Because sex sells, it's a proven fact.

It's a marketing strategy, more people will watch if they don't feel racially excluded.

That is how they draw it that is how they wanted it to look like just because the japanese write and draw manga that doesn't mean they have to look japanese man! You probably thought my answer was a smarta** answer and i'm sorry i didn't mean it to sound like that. Well i hope that helps!

if your gonna watch anime watch naruto or samuria champloo there the best oh yeah and dragon ball z

Once i read that it was because they get mocked a lot about their tiny eyes, and they started drwaing anime putting big shiny eyes and big breasts (to some of the girls).

I know it sounds nonsense but it is also logical too, they were pissed off because of the comments around them, and they decided that if they couldn't have big eyes, at least their characters will.
At least that's what i think.

because it would be too difficult to get all the nuances in an animated face that show in a real persons face to show emotion the use larger eyes ....it makes it easier to convey slight differences

Well they don't always make huge eyes. When anime is more serious the eyes get smaller and more realistic looking. ^^

I agree with tofu. I have read about it (osamu tezuka being influenced by betty boop and how it affected the eye structuring of astroboy etc.) It just became a staple of anime, through recurrences and adaptations..It has evolved from the basic big eye.. to glittery big eyes, sailormoon eyes.. clamp styled big eyes.. lets just say that american and japanese animations influence each other.. now you could see the "perspiration" thingie on totally spies or teen titans as not seen much before in american cartoons. (and I think the overflowing exaggerated tears ala akazukin chacha is becoming more prevalent in cartoons). Though it may have some cultural or social japanese references.. I say its more of a technique in drawing conceived, influenced or adopted.. not much on the cultural overtones..
