I think he is an ordinary dad. Tries too hard, fails a lot but comes out ok in the end.

ehhh I'm kind of iffy on this..he can be a good dad-but he does choke Bart on occasion.

I guess he can be a times.
Like what you said things always come out good in the end, so the answer is maybe.

Inside, he's a great father.

He always does the best he can for his family yet sometimes he does end up in ridiculous situations and do stupid things. But I think he really does love his family, even when he's strangling bart, because he's trying to teach him not to say bad things about other people (usually him) however using violence to achieve this may not also be a great idea.

not really..

Maybe you can tell by one of his quotes

Homer : Instead of using outlet covers I'll just draw little bunnies on them to scare Maggie away.
Marge: She's not afraid of bunnies!
Homer: She will be.

I forgot which episode that was though.

i tink he's a good dad, although there are times when he tried to kill Bart, and often place his own interests and well-being above that of his family... but there are episodes where Homer is shown protecting his family

Not really.

Peter Griffin isn't either but he's funnier.

not really...
