yeah, there are definitely way mroe advanced anime than pokemon out in the world =]
since you are new to anime.... you should try watching something new and popular.
i reccomend these:
naruto, death note and bleach ---> you cant call yourself a fan if you have never even heard of these. #1 most popular anime right now.
inuyasha is older, but it is also reaalllly popuular, even now.
and so is "full metal alchemist".
blood + is also popular.
(these are not just popular, but very good ^^)
if you like comedy/romance then "perfect girl evolution" is a great choice &&
the most popular romance/comedy animes at the moment are "fruits basket" and "ouran high school host club"
"nana" and "peach girl" are also popular =] (and pretty good ^^)
if you are into meccha anime (robots.) then "gundam seed, gundam seed destiny" are the best =]
no, not just giant robots and all that. the gundam series has a very well developed plot, and its not just some "robot" cartoon. the action is great and the plot is incredible!! some other great ones are:

well depends wot you want i like saiyuki but i think they finished they are in 3 parts saiyuki(50 eps) saiyuki reload(25 eps) saiyuki reload gunlock(26 eps) afro samurai which has samuel l jackson in it (5 eps but another 5 being made or aired in febuary but worth watchin) death note which is a mystery anime erm what else fullmetal alchemist and fullmetal panic erm i like the karas films (prophesy and revelation) erm let me think i did like samurai deeper kyo and naruto is ok anyway theres a list of a few of many oh plus outlaw star and gundam wing

If I were you, I would steer away from some of the popular ones that are out there right now. "Popular" doesn't always mean "good," and some of them really aren't a good indication of what anime truly is. Plus, most of them are a few hundred episodes long! I'm sure you'd rather start on something a bit shorter...
I'd love to help you find some good "starter anime," but can you give me a little more information? Age, gender? Favorite genres? For instance, I'd hate to recommend a bunch of romance anime if you hate romance, or a bunch of action anime if that stuff bores you to death. Please add some details so I can give you some recommendations that will be right for you. E-mail me if that would be easier.
The Best Anime Ever now is Naruto & Naruto Shippuuden then Bleach & death note & some others so i recommend Naruto & don't judge by the first three or Four episodes we know they're a bit lame but when the true story starts you can't get enough of it

Well, it depends on what you're into. If you like sports, then things like 'The Prince of Tennis' and 'Eyeshield 21' are shows for you. If you want action/religious anime, I'd highly recommend 'Chrono Crusade'. 'Cased Closed!' is a must for mystery fans. And Ouran High School Host Club and Kiniro no Corda (also known as La Corda d'Oro) are great reverse harems (A bunch of boys in love with one girl, the exact opposite of Love Hina, which is about one boy surrounded by a bunch of pretty girls). As for romance...well, most anime has some sort of romantic theme, so you're covered there at all times. Action...I would say Fullmetal Alchemist, or Inuyasha.
Of course, it also depends on how long you think you'e going to want to follow a series. Inuyasha is so long, I've lost count of the episodes and movies (I think it's over 200 epiosdes and 4 or 5 movies). Now put this episode count against Fullmetal Alchemist, which it tiny in comparison with its 51 episodes and 1 movie.
I highly recommend that you buy an anime magazine (like Anime Insider. I'd tell you the other one I know of, but the name escapes me at the moment), as these often tell you about different animes, what they're about, whether or no they'll be on tv, et cetera.
Oh, and as to that lame pokemon show, you watched as a kid, it was probably onle lame because in America, they edit out all the 'bad' things. For example, there's an episode where Ash has a gun to his head, and another one where James looks like a woman. That's bad for small children, you know? (Even though shows like Pokemon were originally meant to be showed for teens 13 and up...)

i really like anime, but for some beginners, they sometimes feel like anime is wierd, but it really isn't! it's just different than american animation, and people just find it stupid and wierd. if you watch a more variety of anime, you'll like it more.

I highly suggest watching Naruto. Naruto in my opinion is one of the best anime/manga ever so far. I defiantly think is has lived up to the hype about it. The show has a interesting plot with very good art and charter drawing. The show includes action/comedy/romance and drama Here what the show is about. It is about a boy named Naruto who is an orphan and has a demon spirt fox in him that was put there when he was born. Later on Naruto finds friends that like him of who he is. He has made a decision be become the greatest ninja in his village (the village hidden in the leaves), he wants to become hokage, but in order to do that he must train like he never has before as well has battle through missions and interesting foes with his friends and learning new moves/jutsu (speail fighting moves) and marial arts. In between all this there are relationships between charcaters. Naruto is defiantly a series/show/manga that defiantly worth getting into and is one good epic story.

It was a powerful demon indeed; a single swing of one of its nine tails would raise tsunamis and flatten mountains. All in all it has everything you could want out of anime/manga including action/romance/drama/and comdy.

yeah there are way better ones out there. If you enjoyed watching pokemon as a kid that a relatively good sign you'll like anime in general, thats how a lot of people got into anime even if we realize now that pokemon was VERY lame.
because they're are TONS of animes out there and lots of genre's you really just got to find a general theme you like.
Theres romance, action, more of the magic/supernatural ones, fighting, everyday life ones and so on. Personally i love the action, fighting and magic.supernatural ones.
