How did Goten and chibi Trunks become super saiyan so easily?!
Question: Because by the time they were born Goku and Vegeta had already been Super Saiyan and with the higher power level thus when trunks and goten where born their levels were also higher. Think about it this way Vegeta (Fut Trunks timeline) was weaker at SSj Level so Future Trunks took longer to become ssj (i think he was 13) while Vegeta (regular DBz timeline) had trained harder by knowing the androids arrival 3 yrs prior to chibi trunks being born thus more powerful ssj1 vegeta. And Goten being born around some time near end of the Cell Games saga Goku had became already full power ssj. Thus as children their power levels were already exponentially higher than the latter of gohan who was born back when goku was weaker in power level.

Having the ability to become SS is probably genetic.
If it was genetic then it would definately explain WHY it came so easily for them.
I mean, TWO generations became SS, so you'd think it would be easy for them.

it is more in the genetics definately. since goku and vegeta went super saiyan, it was much easier for goten and trunks. really gohan should be considered to be the youngest super saiyan since he really earned it. gohan sure is a gifted kid.
my guess would be...they grew up around super saiyans..in the older shows the strongest being was freeza, and you could see it was hard to surpass that for even goku since he did not have the right training, unlike the newer generation (easier to teach them young instead of old) had the right training and technology...though the newer shoes arent worth watching sadly
I would say it was the desire to be as strong as their relatives. Gotens would look at Gohan and Goku going super saiyan and not be left out. Trunks had to become a super saiyan due to having Vegeta as his father and probably win his respect.
my guess would be training like trunks traning with his dad in 300 times gravity i think goten is the same way (no examples but im guessing something similar)

Only a pure hearted Saiyan can become a Super Saiyan.
The Saiyans were basically the scums of the universe (notorious for beating each other and other people just for the thrill of it), Goku being the pure hearted Saiyan is legendary, since it's rare for a scum of the universe to become pure hearted.
Goten is as pure hearted as his father, Goku.
While Trunks is a pure hearted... rascal.
They both also have the benefit to train with powerful sparing partners (Gohan, Vegeta, Piccolo, etc), plus their fathers are strong Super Saiyans when the two were concieved.
And yes, one of the reasons Goten and Trunks can easily Super Saiyans is a plot twist, to make the characters in the story and the readers/viewers feel weird that now Super Saiyans are now more often seen. It sure made Vegeta very upset, his Super Saiyan pride made him feel cheated that now a bunch of kids were able to do things that he have to worked hard on.
Suffice to say, it seems that the society on Earth allowed Saiyans to become more easily pure hearted than if they were in the Saiyan homeworld, the planet Vegeta.
Even the radical Vegeta was able to become a Super Saiyan during his stay on Earth, though he claimed it due because he's pure evil and wished purely to stronger than Goku.
