Hanban no Tsuki ga Noburo Sora - romance/drama/comedy; Synopsis: two, sickly hospital patients form an unlikely friendship. This is an amusing, yet bittersweet anime.
Grave of the Fireflies - action/drama/historical/angst
This is a very deep," tear-jerker " anime. Synopsis:
An orphaned boy and his younger sister try to survive during WWII in Japan.
Fruits Basket - comedy/drama/romance/reverse harem -Synopsis: a homeless girl wins the hearts of the Sohma family whom are cursed by the 12 spirits of the Jyunishi (animals of the Chinese zodiac). Check it out!
Ayashi no Ceres - Horror/comedy/romance/reverse harem; Synopsis: A girl learns that she carries the cursed lineage of a tenjo. Her family learns of this and wants to kill her......This anime will pull on your heartstrings and some scenes are quite graphic, otherwise its a very good series.
Utawarerumono - romance/action/drama/ecchi etc. This is an awesome anime series. Combines many elements that define a great anime.Synopsis: a man suffering from anmesia becomes emperor and constantly battles to maintain peace between his people and himself. Check it out, you'll love it!

La Corda D'Oro (Kiniro no Corda) - drama/comedy/romance/reverse harem; Synopsis: a girl with a magical violin competes with professional musicians.
Tonagura! - romance/ ecchi/comedy/drama; Synopsis: a perverted boy tries to win his childhood friend's love; check it

Jyu Oh Sei (Planet of the Beast King) - action/adventure/drama/angst; Synopsis: "Survival of the fittest"; a boy fights to live in a strange world full of man-eating plants and criminals to become the Beast King. Check it out !
Elfen Lied - action/drama/horror/gore: a very deep, psychological anime. More like a dark romance drama. This show contains lots of blood and some ecchi. In my opinion, its a very good, but twisted anime.
Nightwalker- horror/romance/drama/comedy ; Synopsis: Vampire detective, Shido, reflects on his past/present life experiences. Even though he's a vampire, he is still very much a human being.
Trinity Blood - action/drama/horror/angst; another interesting series about vampires and vampire hunters. Synopsis: Special human beings of the Vatican ( Crusniks) fight to protect earth from vampiric Methuselahs, who wage war upon humankind.
Wolf's Rain - action/drama/horror/romance -
Synopsis: a pack of wolves masquerating as humans are searching for "Paradise." Check it out!
Pretear - action/romance/drama/reverse harem - this series is good if you like magical girl anime like sailor moon. Synopsis: a girl is told by the Leafe Knights, that she's the Pretear who is needed to save the world.
Death Note - horror/action/drama
Synopsis: Light Yagami finds a mysterious notebook titled "Death Note." The Death Note's instructions claim that if a person's name is written within it, that person shall die. Light then takes it upon himself to ' pass judgement ' on these " evil " humans. Similar to Jigoku Shojo.

Two animes i really liked were:
Fushigi yugi- a girl from our world was chosen to become the suzaku no miko or priestess. She goes to another world where she meets these bishounen (hot guys) who are supposed to guard her. The girl falls in love with one of the guys but their love is very complicated. This anime really made me cry since most of the characters die!
Ginban Kaleidoscope- Tazusa Sakurano is a 16-year-old Japanese Olympic figure skating candidate.While skating, she loses concsciousness. At the same time, Pete Pumps, a 16-year-old Canadian stunt pilot, dies when his stunt plane crashes. Unfortunately for Tazusa, Pete ends up involuntarily inhabiting her body for 100 days. Pete slowly helps tazusa improve her public image and go to the Olympics. In the meanwhile, Pete and tazusa fall in love. This anime has a really sad ending!
