Highlander the animated series is a lot like avatar.
I doubt youve ever heard of it but its really good in my opinion and it just got a DVD release like a couple of months ago I think.
Its actually really like avatar a lot. I wouldnt be surprised if some people who work on avatar used to work in Highlander the animated series or were fans of it.
:p Avatars not a knock off at all and is far more creative than naruto.
But if your new to anime and havent even seen the basics like naruto and dbz then you should definitly check them out they are the best.
My favorite shows right now are avatar and naruto but Im actually really surprised that I have taken an even bigger liking to avatar these days as naruto is in currently in a rut for creativity.
If you're looking for an epic martial arts kinda show, I strongly recommend Naruto. My friends and I consider Avatar to be the kid-friendly knock-off of Naruto.
You may like DragonballZ and DragonBallGT because it has similar elements but it's really long.
