Is the name "Winry" an actual name, or just made up by FMA creator Hir!
Question: I'm just wondering whether the name "Winry" from Fullmetal Alchemist is an actual name, and if it isn't, if it is a nickname of a longer name...also, if it is an actual name, what does it mean?

winry is an old name it was my great great grandma's name i forget what it means though. i think it might be irish not sure though
Dunno, maybe it's an old name, like Alphonse, I'd never heard it before but it turns out it's an old-ish name. =)
It seems that winry is not a real name and I don't think it is a nickname for a longer name either.
my aunt had two dogs named winnie and winry, so im assuming she must have gotten these names from somewhere, and this was waaay before fma :)
Im guessing that its not a made up name, but maybe not a person's name, or even a common name.
Well, it's definitely not a real name of someone. The author just decided to name Winry Rockbell after a tool manufacturing company in Taiwan called Winly. Pinako Rockbell was named after a tool manufacturing company called Pinaco. If u want more info, here:

I don't believe it is a real name. I can't find anything on the name, so I think it was made up by Arakawa-sensei.
It is real.
It'a nickname for "Winfred".
It's an old name.
