Dattebayo DOES NOT mean believe it. Believe it is a phrase that was meant to be Naruto's catchphrase in the English dub and it was made to fit the lip flaps whenever the Japanese version used Dattebayo.

As for dattebayo itself, it's not supposed to have any meaning to it it's just a speech pattern thing to give Naruto character.

"believe it"

The official dub translates it as "Believe it!" but according to the mangaka, it doesn't mean anything. It's not a real word; I guess an English comparison would be "fuhgeddabutit."

this is a play on words. the "translation" that you are looking for is "that-a-boy".

There isn't really a meaning to what Dattebayo means. From the english version of Naruto it seems that Dattebayo means believe it, but that can be false. Naruto just tags on the word to the end of his sentences and that gives him an unique style of speech. I think Naruto says it because saying stuff like that at an end of a sentence makes him seem tougher than he really is. Masashi Kishimoto doesn't even know what it means. :D

It means "Believe it"in english dub but i hardly believe its meaning is like that. I mean , in japanese most expressions like these don't have a certain meaning, they just express emotions.
Anyway, naruto is a bit of a retard(oh come on, don't deny! he's my fav charachter in the anime but still it doesn't make him less retarded or childish) that's the reason(maybe) of so much dattebayo...

I think he says Dattebayo so much because that's kind of his catch phrase. It doesn't have a true meaning but I know that in the dub they change dattebayo to Believe it! But the good thing is Naruto hasn't said dattebayo or believe it as much since the land of waves arc.

I've always thought that Naruto used Dattebayo to express the emotion he is feeling at the time the way some people say jeez. I've never thought that it had a literal translation.

If u watched the anime on youtube, they have the english translation at the bottom
