Anyone who runs around in public in tights and a cape doesn't want their name in the news.
everyone they know and who's close to them would be endangered.
they would not be endagered as they have the same powers w/wo the tights.
they maintain a second indentity of a nomal person because they feel they need that normalcy in their lives. the ability to shed all that responisbility and go out on a date and not have to worry about being surrounded by screaming fans, paparatzi, etc.
kinda why celbreties adorn huge sunglasses and wigs..
you should check out the Marvel Civil War series. It kind of talks about what you are asking. It deals with superhero's having to register their real identities with the government as well as the ramifications of doing so.

Aside from dangers to their family and freinds, superheroes cause alot of damge to public property. If their identity were known, the villains could simply SUE them to death.
Superheroes' greatest weakness is the ones they love without superpowers. If,say, Superman's identity was known -- then his enemies could simply attack Lois or Ma. Their deaths would devastate him and allow his enemies to win.
You REALLY need to read "Identity Crisis" , the DC small series.
Also, Civil War is sort of good, but misses out between all the fighting about pride and such.
If you were a superhero and I knew who you were, and knew you were in midtowm fighting a super-villan, what would stop me from killing your family? Thats why SuperHeroes have their secret identity.
