What type of shaman should I be?!

It depends on what interests you. Shamans are a hybrid class, which basically means they can be a "jack of all trades". You can either be elemental (ranged caster dps, think mage with higher armor and the benefits of healing yourself), enhancement (melee dps. can dual wield. think of rogue, dps warrior. plus the added benefits of using the instant shock spells for added damage and hey guess what you can still heal yourself). Finally there is restoration, which is the healing build. this is not a very effective build to use while leveling on your own, since it is totally geared towards buffing party members and into healing. If you choose this path be prepared to not hit 70 for a looong time and also to have it take forever to kill mobs.
I have played my shaman as each of these. I find that I enjoy enhancement the best because of the faster burst damage. It seems to be the best leveling build and also is very viable if you want to enjoy pvp as well as pve play. I should also note that I do not suggest putting all of your points into one talent tree.

Go Enhancement while leveling, and once you get to 70 go resto. There are a shortage of good healers out there.

Don't forget you can re-spec!! If you try something and hate it, re-spec. I have! I am new to the shammy too! I usually play a rogue, but I am really diggin' the shammy!
Dont listen to them their dumb. Just spec in fighting and a bit in healing because when your in the twenties everyone will want you to heal. And don't worry you can re-spec so when you want to edit your talent points you will be able to.

I would go elemental or enhancement to level, then switch to resto later on.
