True or False: In simple words, cartoon is a US cartoon and anime is a Japanese !

Question: In the U.S.: true
In Japan: false

"Anime" is just a borrowed word from "animation," so in Japan, Ratatouille can also be considered anime (it's ranked #1 in today's Oricon anime DVD category). In the U.S., anime refers to strictly Japanese animation/cartoons.

I was talking to this lady at work who is from Japan and I told her I like anime, and she asked me if I had seen Madagascar. I chuckled and tried to explain how we use the term "anime" over here.

True. Actually, come to think about it, it's false. A cartoon refers to anything that is animated whereas anime refers to a genre of cartoon that is produced in Japan.

OMG! True.

False, cartoons and anime are the same thing. Animation is animation regardless of its origin.

Over all they are the same thing... animated shows. Anime is equated to Japan and Cartoons is equated to the United States (for the most part)

i dont know...but,some people, for easy, cartoon for us,usually, people do like that...if say anime, they will know that cartoon from japanese..if say cartoon, they know for US

False, cuz they're both ANIMATION, cartoon and anime are words used to differentiate between the 2 cuz of different animation designs and graphics and method of storytelling.

True.

Japanese Anime and US cartoons are worlds apart.

Think of it as cars made by FORD and TOYOTA. Both cars but different manufacturers. Would you say that a Ford Focus is the same as a Toyota Corolla?

In Simple Words:
We can say that anime is animation originated from Japan
Cartoon and anime are not the same thing but the can both be categorized as "Animation".

False: anime, is a post-war artistic movement, blending low-art into a commercial and popular artform full of futurism, violence and sexuality. At the time, American 'cartoons' were totally different and they continued to diverge down different paths. Anime is not just restricted to Japan either, the artform is also adopted by many Korean animation companies.

basically - the label and difference comes from the 'art style', art 'period' and 'influences' these distinguish Anime from American style comics and cartoons. only noobs group them together :P It's not whether 'animation is animation'. It's history, culture etc.

False.

Anime has been brought to America and is made so child friendly, that they took out all the blood, swearing, and content that makes it anime. actually, this isn't the real reason but I had to say it.

Anime is just a style. Contains to different genre almost too. They go and are still cartoons. American has a satyle too and genre. They are all cartoons just different audience and styles.

False.

"Cartoon" is a U.S.A. term for drawn things, which can encompass a lot of things, including animation. "Naruto" is a Japanese cartoon to the U.S.A. people.

"Anime" is a Japanese term for animation (a.k.a. "animeeshon"), that only apply to animation. "The Simpsons" is an U.S.A. anime to the Japanese people.

However... It can be also be 'True', due the term 'anime' is often unofficially used by non-Japanese to describe animation from Japan.
