I think what you might have heard of was Naruto Shippuuden, which is the second series in the Naruto installment. It's not a sideplot, but it's a series all on its own, which takes place about two and a half years after the first series when most of the Genin are about 12 or 13 years old. In Naruto Shippuuden, a 15 years-old Naruto returns to Konoha after his journey and training with Jiraiya.
It has not been released in the U.S. and is still fairly fresh and currently airing in Japan, so all the episodes are in original Japanese form with English subtitles and not English dub. A new episode is shown once every week, depending on when it airs in Japan and how fast people can translate and place subtitles.
Naruto Shippuuden is available for free viewing on various video websites, such as Youtube.com, Veoh.com, etc. or can be downloaded via bit torrent on Dattebayo.com, etc. I recommend just watching them on Veoh.com, since the quality is really good, it's free, and the episodes are all in one video instead of being split into parts.

I think you might be thinking of Naruto Shippuden. Its the second series in the Naruto series. At episode 220 Naruto goes and leaves with Jiraya to train.
220 Setting Out:
The time has finally come! Now that Jiraiya's returned, Naruto says his goodbyes and prepares to leave Konoha to begin his training.
The Naruto comes back in episode 221 bening away for 2 1/2 years.
221 Homecoming:
Two and a half years have passed since Naruto went with Jiraiya to train. Now he has returned, and although most things are the same, other things have changed. From Konohamaru becoming a genin to Tsunade's head being added to the Great Stone Faces. Now, Naruto resumes his old life, only he's changed as well.
