What is the deal with anime fans?!

Question: A lot of anime fans on here will answer questions like "what is your favorite cartoon?" or "who is your favorite cartoon character?" and use anime and anime characters as their answer...but if someone were to call anime 'cartoons', they get all bent out of shape and say that there is a huge difference between anime and cartoons. So, why answer a question about cartoons with an anime answer if anime isn't a cartoon?

Make up your mind, people!

thank you thank you thank you. I couldnt have said it better myself

ITs a hypocritic idea with soem anime nerds and narutards that somehow there magical anime assends cartoons in glorification.

I really dont get it and it discusts me

Anime Geek and american Cartoon Geek

oh . yeah .

Because they're elitist idiots who don't understand that animation is still animation no matter where it's made. Anime and Cartoons are the same thing.

because they are willing to look like a hypocrite just to gain 2 points.

I have NO IDEA why people do that. It's really silly to answer a question like "What's your favourite cartoon?" for example with an Anime and later when someone calls it "cartoon" they go all nuts. If Anime is not a cartoon, why do you have to do something silly like that.

ok, we all know that actually anime=cartoon coz cartoon=animation and anime=animation as well, only anime is japanese, so to know what we're talking about we use anime, as japanese cartoon and cartoon, as american cartoon, so if question is about what is your fav cartoon character then I guess answer should be about american cartoon characters not anime, those who include in their answer anime characters as well, probably just don't know the difference or doesn't know what anime as definition is...maybe there should be certain title for american cartoons too? so all would know about what we're talking about...like toons or toonies or something, maybe? x)

I`m pretty sure there`s a split and anime 'it isn`t a cartoon' fans wouldn`t answer with an anime character. They tend to be more hardcore and older fans. They go to conventions, discuss minutia about insane things, get into violent sub versus dub arguments (I have so done that ^^;;). Eventually we calm down but there`s like an angry teenage anime rebellion phase or something.
The super chipper fan who has just fallen in love with something on tv and thinks all anime styled animation is anime even when it`s clear to the hardcore fans that it`s been made outside of Asia, doesn`t really care yet. Ask them what their favourite anime/cartoon/book character is they will try to answer Naruto no matter what.
Course there`s also the past all that fans who know that word anime actually refers to all animation, including Western animation, in Japan and realize arguing about semantics is kinda silly when you`re talking about fan defined words. They`ll probably start a whole lecture about it if you let them *cough* but won`t get angry.
It`s probably best for the sanity of all involved in anime fans continue to watch anime and not cartoons though. I have never been in a 'which is better dc/marvel/shounen jump?' discussion but I can`t imagine it would be pretty. There needs to be like psa for anime and cartoon fans or something so everyone`s on board.

cartoon is NOT anime!
it's just common knowledge, and a great deal of difference there! i mean, commonsense tells you what's what once you even look at it.
but as to why people talk about anime characters when answering cartoon questions, maybe they are overly supportive?! i dunno, and dun do that....

The people you speak of are not educated about the differences between Japanese Anime and American cartoons. Seasoned fans know this, so I don't think you should be so general in your reference to anime fans. However, many of us become offended by others that call anime "cartoons" because they have a preconceived notion of what anime is, that just because it's animated it's also juvenile and strictly made for little kids. Also, "outsiders" tend to think of anime fans as immature and that we have no social lives, or that we are mentally inferior to the general public. Those are the main reasons we get offended.
