Question: Why is it that naruto got his mother's last name as his and not his fathers? ive been wondering that for awhile and its making me pretty irritated . thank you to anyone who answers!

That's how it works with every illegitimate child. Since the two people aren't married, the woman does not take the man's last name. Therefore, the child does not take the father's last name. (This happens in Fullmetal Alchemist as well. Elric is Ed and Al's mother's name.)
maybe they didnt want ot make it extremely public that yondaime was narutos dad..... i think....
if everyone knew that he was his son and that he basically sacrificed naruto for the sake of the village.... i think they might have respected him more............

well yondaime means 4th and thats not narutos fathers name its minato and as she said illegitament child and if many ppl knew narutos father was th yondaime hokage(4th hokage) he might of been treated like sasuke(like a king) and if he grew up being babied by the village he might be a punk and not he man he's today secondly naruto might try to avenge his father by killing the kyuubi which for naruto is impossible at the moment

Plus, it will be troublesome for Naruto if he kept his father's family name - this might put him into danger, or makes Naruto more stubborn than he is now, or whatever.
I'd love to see him changing his family name into Namikaze once he became the Hokage. :)
