The x men because they introduced not just one new type of power but a whole slew of powers. They introduced common powers while also making up their own at the same time. Also new characters could be introduced without ruining the whole story.

xmen are my new super hero favorites, i really like wolverine, but i like batman as an old super hero.

I would have to go with Batman if you put him the " superhero" Category. I always thought of him as a vigilante. If that knocks him out then the answer is Green Latern.
I used to say the X-Men but now I'm going with Batman. Granted he's a dark, brooding character but is totally human, without any powers, and only does his good work with the help of his brain and his intellect. Well, that and a sidekick.
