Because that is what Jesus would do...its easy to love those and care for those that you already know but it is more noble to show pity on those that you have never been acquainted with. You don't do it for notoriety and fame but out of the goodness of your heart.
Because no one cares about me. I would go out of my way to show kindness to others. I absolutely hate the holidays. I can find no one to share it with so of course I help strangers and may by next year some one will help me.

What goes around comes around, yeah? If you were that person, and you were having trouble and were wishing someone would help you, its the greatest feeling to be helped out by somebody, especially if they don't know you. It shows that they wouldn't help you only if you were their friend, but just because its the right thing to do. Hopefully you would do the same for another person, and that person would do it for someone else, and so on. You could, singlehandedly, start a chain of kindness. Hopefully someday someone would do it back to you.
