why do the Americans have to make the transformers super ugly?!! it's bad enough they gave Optimus Prime stupid flames in the film but this is too much!!

First, don't insult other people. Ok? All right, the first link shows an Optimus Prime from the Robots in Disguise series from 2001, an adaptation from a series called Car Robots. The Robots in Disguise cartoon rewrote the Japanese Transformers series Car Robots, transforming the all-new Japanese cast into familiar American characters, notably Optimus Prime and Prowl. The other link shows the new Transformers Animated series. There is a tendency now to make things "animated", a form of art where characters are deformed into a ultra-cartoony version, or "highly-stylized"as they call it. See the link below to a Pirates of the Caribbean Animated Jack maquette to see what I'm talking about. So I can say they are two different series with two different art styles. But I do prefer the first one, the animated one looks like a drawing from a 6-year-old. Have you noticed that most American cartoons now are done very simple and with a stupid premise? Old cartoons taught us moral, values and other stuff, new cartoons teach kids to be spoiled, stupid and empty-headed.
The original cartoon looked more like the japanese one you posted. I think that CGI is the root cause of the ugly. It is easier to let a computer do the work than draw them out, and a lot is lost stylistically, imo. However, I wonder if the japanese pic you reference is current.
