From what they had showed:
Kakashi knew gaara was going to be a very strong opponent, and he thought something wasnt right
So he taught Sasuke a new move ( Chidori )
Since it consumed enormous amounts of chakra, he needed to rest.
Besically, Kakashi and Sasuke were trying to perfect his chidori
Because they had to practice with the chidori i think
He was preparing with Kakashi to face Gaara, they knew what he was up to and Kakashi had to fill him in.
training. the chidori consumes a lot of chakra.
Sasuke and Kakashi were training. Kakashi was preparing Sasuke for his fight, by learning chidori.
well from what they showed they were training (with the chidori) because they knew he was up against gaara so he trained as much as he could
Kakashi was training Sasuke to perfect the chidori.
because the ones who made the anime wanted to give them a "cool" entrance at the stadium.
in the anime they were late cuz of practicing chidori since sasuke can only use it 3 times before hes wiped out and i think die.....
BUT {this totally made up 4 no reason at all} i think kakashi could have been readin icha icha and lost track of time
OR they both fell asleep during training the day b4 and woke up late & they rushed.....ok may be not rushed....to the stadium & they got lucky that the "kazekage" {aka orochimaru} basically begged the 3rd hokage to postpone the match till they got there
