To Japanese (and other Asian) animators:?!

Question: My 9-year old who's always glued on Animax & CN asked me today why almost all anime & cartoon characters have large eyes when they're made by Japanese (well, mostly Asian anyway)? Wondered about that myself since my Voltes-V and Daimos days. I hope this question is not offensive in any way. Told her I'd ask this on Y!A. Please don't put nasty, offensive or senseless answers as I'll let her read your answers! Sites and links would be appreciated. Thanks!

Well I'm no, manga artist but, I do have a partial answer to this question since I've wondered myself a long time ago. Dr.Osamu Tezuka, (1928-1989) the artist who is considered to be the "inventor of manga" or the "the god of Manga" was greatly influenced by certain cartoons that were popular at the time, such as Betty Boop, and Mickey Mouse. Also large eyes serve the practical purpose of, making the characters emotional states very easy to express. I mean doesn't it just break your heart when you see those huge eyes "watering up". :p

I don't know an exact answer [I apologize.], but I think it's basically because that's how their drawing style is.
It's like asking why "American" cartoons are drawn the way they are.
There is no one reason, but it's how the people were taught, or learned how to draw. We all have our own style of everything.
It's like your handwriting. You trained yourself to make your own distinct handwriting [unless you tried to copy someone else's].

The drawings don't have to be a reflection of the drawer him/herself.

The Japanese like to make the make characters of stories blonde as well. Am I the only one that noticed that?

It makes it easy to convey the feelings and emotion with the big eyes. As 2D is more complex and difficult to draw out human emotion. It is also conveyed that big eyes are more friendly then drawing/having small or beady where those are used to convey bad or evil people/intentions. Also as Lord Voldemort says Dr.Osamu Tezuka, the artist who started the manga Astoboy started the trend and it have been the standard ever since.

many manga artist went to school about manga and anime and when athours make the characters its how they draw it but not all have big eyes (i know many women artist and they mostly draw cute manga that turns into anime but its really what the artist draw that makes what the anime or manga looks
