Why do my download files never work?!

Question: i download a lot of videos online and i go to the sites everyone recommends most and i download something then i go into my files and when i click on it to watch it, windows media player pops up and it says that it like doesn't recognize the files or something. on every single site i go to this happens and i don't understand why or how i can get it to work properly. the only site that allows me to download clean video files is veoh and i think that's because to download a video there, you download it with their downloader. can anyone explain this to me and how to fix it?

There are a lot of possible reasons. Either its an older version of Windows Media Player and a new file type, or it is a type (like .ogm) that WMP doesn't support.

Go to http://www.videolan.org/vlc

and download vlc. VLC can read almost any video file. To use vlc first open it, then go to File/Quick Open File, and pick the video file you want to play.

And by the way, the reason veoh works is because when you download it it automatically converts it to a file type it can read, usually .avi which is the universal microsoft video file, and always works in windows media player

Dump Microsoft and get the VLC Media Player. It's free, and it will cause far fewer problems. Just google it.

You need to check the file extensions. .avi, .mp4, etc. can affect your players ability to recognize these files. You can use a converter to change the file extensions or download files you know will work. Windows media player works with .avi - always so look for this file extension.
