Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle?!

Question: A friend of mine owns a DVD of Howl's Moving Castle and she told me it was a really good movie. Lol, but when we were going to watch it she couldn't find it! So I wanted to ask... Is it a really great movie? What's it about?

I also learned that Spirited Away was made by the same director. Is that a good movie too? What's that about?

Sorry, I know a lot of questions, but my friend wouldn't tell me anything cause she didn't want to spoil it for me >.<

Thanks so much for the help!

Ohhh Spirited Away is absolutely amazing. It's about this young girl named Chihiro, and she loses her parents and finds herself in the spirit world. She has to rescue her parents without being caught and killed. And she meets some very interesting spirits along the way.
I loved this movie. Definitely recommended.

How's Moving Castle--I haven't seen all of it. It's about this young girl named Sophie who meets this charming young wizard named Howl. But then the Witch of the Waste comes along and turns her into an old woman, because of a hinted priror connection with Howl.

I think that all of Miyazaki's films are wonderful. Princess Mononoke was excellent as well. My favorite movie.

Spirited Away is my son's favorite movie. Howl's Moving Castle didn't make sense to him since it didn't seem to be well translated into English. Spirited Away is about being spirited away. Watch it and see!

i've seen Spirited away. and it is a great movie, it japanese anime and is about a girl who gets stuck in the spirit world w/ her parents and (i'm sorry i havnt seen it since it was in theatres) somehow they turn into pigs and she has to work for a spirit man to free them and to be able to go home, in the meantime she "accidently" lets in a bad spirit into the building called NoFace who is really bad is i think was eating or killing all the other ppl. and she then has to free them too. i cant tell u the ending tho. :)

howl is about a young girl who's travelling around trying to break a curse that was placed upon her when she offended a witch.

spirited away is about a young girl who's trying to break a curse that was placed upon her parents while they accidentally stumbled into a spirit realm.

hmmmm...they may sound similar, but really they are nothing alike. (howl's moving castle is from a book by diana wynne jones, but it's changed quite a bit for the movie. it may help to read it first though.) both are excellent movies. check with your local library - they may have copies. (and go watch "The Cat Returns" too, that's another good one of his.)

Spirited Away is an amazing movie...
Howl's Moving Castle was okay... I didn't really get the plot though...

You should just watch it :)

Both of those are better seen than explained, so I'd advise you find those DVDs and get watching. ;-) Spirited Away is one of my favorite movies, animated or otherwise, though I'm not a fan of the localization because it actually *modifies* the plot from what was originally written. Even if you don't speak a word of Japanese you can get this from the subtitles. For Howl, while it is beautiful to look at and listen to, it falls flat on its face as a move a little over halfway through...

In brief:
Spirited - Own
Howl - Rent

And no, believe it or not, I'm not an Anime nerd.

Spirited away is DEFINITELY a good movie. I'll try not to spoil it for you but its basically about a girl who finds herself trapped in a spirit world and finds herself trapped within along with with the fact that her parents have been turned into pigs. There, a spirit named Haku helps her find her way back to her world. She meets other characters along the way such as the witch responisble for all of it named Yubaba, I haven't watched Howl's Moving Castle, but if its from the same director, it'll probably be really good. I can give you the link to the story. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howl's_Movi...

All of the Studio Ghibli offerings are very good, filled with action and adventure.

I prefer "The Cat Returns" myself.

Between the two, I pick Spirited over Howl, but it's like choosing between a da Vinci and a Michelangelo; there is no wrong choice

i don't do spoilers sorry! but i CAN tell you that they are both wonderful movies! they are actually 2 of my fav. movies and i have A LOT of anime. the graphics are beautiful also see if you can find one called Princess Mononoke. its by Miyazaki.

It may be because I saw Spirited Away before Howl which is why I like Spirited Away more. But I can guarantee that they are both really good. It also just so happens to be my absolute favorite!

You might hear people tell you that anime is almost always better in Japanese than in English, but I'm not picky. As long as I know what's going on, I don't mind. It's just easier in English because you don't have to read the movie. But I've gotten good at that.

Anyway, you probably already know what each movie is about after reading through all of the answers. But I'd reccommend you see Howl after Spirited Away. But see both!

Of Miyazaki's movies, I've seen Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbor Totoro, and Howl. I've really loved all of them in both English and Japanese. I own only a few on DVD but I am hoping to get more.
