Well, the reason he made that statement was because he knew Near was very good at getting info from people, and if Takada was bugged, he didn't want L (Light) to find out where his hideout was. Near and Mello essentially worked together more or less to catch Kira on a few occasions. I never watched the anime, but I read the manga.
