In the classic Transformers, Megatron was a gun modeled after a Walther P-38. Later in the animated Transformers movie, he became Galvatron and transformed into a cannon.
The Megatron that transforms into a plane is the recent Transformers movie. So basically there is no right or wrong. It could be that Hasbro wanted to rehash the whole thing.
But in case, you didn't know is that on Cybertron, all the Transformers do not actually transform into earth like vehicles or objects. They initially have what is called a cybertronian form. They then mimic a form that is familiar on a native planet to adopt and adjust for stealth reasons. So for all you know, Megatron's original form could have been a jet before they crashed on earth because his cybertron mode was never revealed in the classic.
