For those who watched "Death Note" last night?!
Question: How do the English voices compare to the Japanese ones, like how was the cast selection, do they represent the character properly, and how was the overall translation, things like that.
I want some REAL answers not just the bull crap answers you normally see on here.

I'm going to say that there is going to be a lot of biased answers for this series. Most people have watched the Japanese version and already complained about how the dub was going to be horrible, yet still chose to watch it.
The same ones in turn, have said that they were generally impressed by the dub, and they'll tune in to the future episodes.
From the first episode however, nothing is set in stone. You've mainly seen the 2 main characters, and not the rest. Seeing it in English is going to get used to, if you actually give the series a chance. So, I would highly suggest watching more of the series before making any conclusions.
Secondly, comparing apples with oranges can't work. English cast is NOT Japanese, so it is fair to say that they WILL sound different from their counterparts.
I'm a Brad Swaile fan, but when I found out as his lead role as Light Yagami, I was really unsure of what he would sound like. For one thing, I hate Light. Secondly, Brad's role has been a few of the anti heroes, but from shows I've seen he's mostly the "good guy." So, this was kind of a new role for him in my eyes. I personally was pleased with it, but your ears may vary. Some will like, some won't, you know?
As for Ryuk, I fell in love with it completely. I really had no complaints. I'm just comparing both episodes, I only saw the first episode fansub. But now that the series is licensed, I will purchase the DVD.
Translations between fansubs and DVD subtitles will vary...so there could be words that change for the Japanese DVD version.
^.^; Don't expect the SAME words between them both, but with references and such, it may have to change to fit English audiences. I doubt they butchered any translations. Fans who seen the fansubs said that it was done well, sooooo...
I hope this explanation is okay, because most people who post questions like this want to look for people who generally hate the dub. Not trying to accuse you, but it happens a LOT.
I was genuinely disappointed by the English dub, mainly by the sub-par voice acting.
for the most part i liked the english voices... and i intend to keep watching on adult swim... but im sry to say that i havnt seen death note in japanese... but there wasnt anything annoying about the voices that would make me want to go watch it in japanese... im content with the english version.... the only reason why i might switch to japanese is if they edit curses... but ill check out the death note in japanese and get back to you...
but like i said nothing is provoking me to watch in japanese... like i stopped relying on the english version of naruto becase of his voice and the edited curses... but that isnt the case with death not ... all araound i like the english ,but out of curiosity ill cheack out the japanese and see which i like better
I'll be honest and say that I've never seen the Japanese version, but I did like the English voices. Brian Drummond(hope I spelled it right) is one of the best voice actors(in my opinion). Usually I tend to lean towards the Japanese voice casting whenever I watch an anime(excluding Rurouni Kenshin because he sounds like a girl in the Japanese version).
