It deals with death and being "god", The appropriate age for this might be 13 and above because of the issue it tackles is a little bit complicated. In terms of violence and gore, it isn't as bloody as Shippuden is turning out to be. Comparing it to FMA philosophy, death note hits a more realistic tone.
12 and up?
I'd think that death note is for 13 years and above. It has longer conversation scenes than it has action scenes so younger children would find that boring. But if a kid younger than 13 would like to watch death note, I believe it would be ok because I think that there are other animes out there that are more violent and/or more ecchi that are being watched by kids nowdays.
For your second question, Yes I believe it's more advanced than naruto, bleach and full metal alchemist.
I would recommend viewers 13 and up to watch this anime. It is a different kind of anime in comparison to Bleach, FMA and Naruto definately. You will enjoy it more!
