Sounds pretty cool Well anime is mostly animation from Japan and is really targeted to people of all ages but most is often targeted at teens. Anime designs may vary but there are often have common elements.
However, the one thing that distinguishes anime from usual cartoons is that they have very intricate plots and very realistic character personalities. I'd most definitely recommend watching it if it catches your interest ^^

Pretend her answer does not exist. cause kewl people like it I have no idea...I have been meaning to ask this question my self. it's a Japanese cartoon/animation, and it's popular because it's for all ages not only kids, so it's not like the normal cartoons, it has its own name "anime"!
and all the anime are based on its manga stories, the manga comes first then the anime..... Japanese comic books aka Manga`s.
Popular because the pictures look cool and they have tv show series after the books.(Action such as Narutard & Bleach) Ahaa.. Anime is the japanese style of comic book writing..it is very popular in the U.S. because it reads from right to left and makes the story very interesting...I enjoy good anime I love Fruits Basket you should read the series sometimes....or maybe Inuyasha they have books and the show comes on Adult Swim at like one in the morning it's really good.... a crappy excuse for a cartoon Anime is classified as a childrens' show that is appearing on FOXTEL or on tv. It is popular because kids like it and think the tv show is cool. Asian cartoons, basically... Japanese animation, sometimes based on manga (japanese comic books), but not always.
It's popular because it's usually very well done (animation-wise), the stories are exciting, well-written or just plain fun.
Depending on what you like, there's usually an anime for it (action, fighting, drama, romance, silly cartoony stuff, mystery, etc). Anime is what used to be called japanamation. It is anamation from Asian Countries. Shows like DragonBall Z, pokemon, FLCL, Avatar, and even Kappa Mikey. among many others are all Japanease animation. It is popular because it is made for adults and kids and is alot more entertaining for older people than things that are available for kids on American Television. Although I must state, not all anime is appropriate for kids. anime is like cartoons from janpan. they have a long story line and usally take awhile to fugire out. there cool to watch because it's like a book, you have to find out what happens to the chararters.
