that sounded soo stupid to me - but im not sure?
we live in Michigan and shes flying to California - and she said it takes so long ( not only because of the distance ) - but because your fighting the wind - because the wind comes from the west ?

It's true. It's called the Jet Stream. There are certain global air currents. That is one of them. It helps minimize travel time from West to East across the US and makes it slightly tougher going back East to West because you're fighting the current.
