Recording Crisis?!

Question:

Recording Crisis?

There is a really important performance coming up that I might play at. But I don't know if I can do it because I need a recent recording to get in. For one thing, I don't even have any equipment. Are there other ways I can be recorded? How do I find the right recording studio? Give me your input.

Answers:

Go to the yellow pages and look for recording studios in your area. Get prices for doing a demo. Most will give you a break especially if you come in during "off hours". Above all, get a demo from them that has samples of your kind of music. Visit and see what they have to offer especially if they have instruments available for you to use...especially pianos if that's your instrument. You didn't say. If it's guitar, bring your own. Find out how long they have been in business. Generally the smaller studios have lower rates, but it's the sound you're looking for. My studio is tiny, but I've been engineering since 1966 and the sound I get is great because I know how to get the most out of very little. I wouldn't spend $300 for a studio-in-a-box. For $300 you can get a lot of studio time and not have to worry about starting from scratch at home. Learning curve or not, the right microphone types and placement are far more important than the equipment or media they are recorded on.
