How do internet courses work?!

How do internet courses work?

I mean how do you take a course if you never have to go to class and how do you get tested for it? If you get tested in front of a computer too wouldn't that mean you can cheat?

I'm just confused about internet courses in general, anything about them would help. thanks-

I took a criminal justice course through Kaplan University on line. They send you text books. You are tested on material in those text books. You can do research on the Internet at sites the course instructor gives you. There are chat rooms for each instructor's class. You have to attend them. It's mandatory. There the instructor discusses topics and grades students by their participation and answers in the chats. Also you may have to write Essays. It's hard to cheat and it's a lot of work just as if you were going on campus. Hope this helps a little. Good Luck

PS I got a syllabus of what was going to be covered so that helped me prepare in advance what to study.
