Which city is The Simpson's set in?
I googled it and they said that it's a mystery. I think Mayor Quimby is based off of Buddy Cianci, former mayor of Providence, RI AND in the episode tonight, the chief of police Wiggum spelled Cianci in the snow with piss (really coffee.. joke). I think it's set in Springfield, MA which is right on the edge of MA/RI. Any thoughts?

Actually, the answer is pretty much just "Springfield." The name was picked because nearly every state gas at least one Springfield. Thus Springfield has become an "anywhere" town - it could be accross the coubtry or right near where you live. The writers on the show have generally gone through great pains to conceal Springfield's "real" location, inventing fictional state abbreviations and obscuring maps. Still fans have tried to figure out where Springfield is, either through educated guessing (Springfield Oregon is a favorite since Matt Groening grew up near there) or process of elimination (for example, in one episode Homer's ex-boss write and tells him Homer to looks him up "if you're ever on the east coast" presumably eliminating all those states). The "Behind the Laughter" episode does seem to suggest that Springfield is in Kentucky, but that epsiode is also kind of out of continuity, showing the Simpsons as a family of actors who created the show. There was a recent contest in which different Springfields argued theor case for being the "real" Springfield and the winner chosen by voters was given the Simpsons Movie premiere. Springfield Vermont won the contest, but I doubt this gives them any claim to being the actual Springfield as far as the show goes. As a final word on the subject, if you watch the movie trailer, it's pointed out that you can see four states from Springfield, none of which were remotely near each other. So the actual location of Springfield is probably not going to ever be revealed, or at least, not in a way that statisfies everything that we know about it.
