Why is it called a purple patch?!

Question:

Why is it called a purple patch?

Answers:

Purple dye was rare long ago... only the wealthiest people could afford it. As such, purple cloth came to denote the upper class. Folks with less money would sew patches of purple cloth on their clothing to make themselves appear wealthy.

A Roman poet by the name of Horace, upon critiquing the work of another used the phrase 'purple patch' to refer a flowery bit of wording or imagery that detracted from the overall work. He was commenting that language (like people) can be inappropriately and ineffectively concerned with appearance to the point of the ridiculous.
