Or just do a happy wiggle and go on. What is the proper thing to do?

A thanks would be appropriate, yeah. Especially if the asker chose your answer out of - let's say - 50 answers. Now that takes a lot of patience to check each one of them and then pick THE ONE. :)
So just say "thanks", ya know, for the effort :)
