my grandparents have the cylinder records..they gave them to me to clean b/c they're very dusty/dirty..they said to only clean the top part http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/image:bluea...
just so the name and artist is clear..my gpa said no to mess with the actual record..and he said not to get it wet..but i'm scrubbing the top w/ a toothbrush and water keeps running down..so do you think it's ok if they get a little wet? because they're really dusty all over..so i dont even think they'll play when they're so dirty....

STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do not clean them, do not get water on them, do not dust them, do not even HANDLE them. Do you watch Antiques Roadshow on PBS?? Follow the links on the PBS site, and you will find experts who can advise you about these. If you CLEAN them, they lose a lot of value. They must be EXPERTLY cleaned - not with a kid with a toothbrush! You could be messing with 10 bucks - ten thousand bucks!
