Flute problem... Any suggestions?!

Question:

Flute problem... Any suggestions?

I just bought a new flute a couple of months ago, and I can't help notice an awful stain it has on the mouthpiece. Is that suppose to happen? I've cleaned carefully every time I've played it. If so, can it come off? Any suggestion on lubricants?
Advaice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Answers:

Is your flute silver, silver plated, or nickel plated? Could also be other materials like, gold - but you'd know! Your own body chemistry is leaving the stain on the lip plate. I doubt you have worn thru the plating - more than likely a chemical reaction. Nickel will clean up well with those little Cape Cod cleaning cloths that come in a pouch - your hardware store or even Walgreen's should have them. Just wipe off the flute really well when finished. Silver? VERY VERY carefully use a tiny amount of silver polish. Do NOT run any part of the flute under water!!!! Do not use petroleum jelly or anything else to clean the flute. Those little rubbing alcohol wipes that a nurse uses before giving you an injection are often used to wipe the lip plate at flute conventions, when many people are testing flutes - they will kill germs, but not change the finish or shine in any way - which means they will not clean a stain.

Is you CHIN also turning black? You might need to glue a stamp or something else non-toxic onto the lip plate. Many of us pros do than when we play under hot lights, or outdoors in the humidity.

If the flute is tight ot put together, do NOT use any lubricants - just keep the insides and outsides of all joint REALLY clean - cloth and elbow grease only! Enjoy playing - I have been playing the flute since 1963.
