I have thought about that in the very first place
and the fact they were traveling to different countries during that time and if he waited that long to see her again to break up, it means he would have had to pretend like everything is ok

Exactly! If they are so far away, there is no point in driving across the country to dump her!. If may have been a bit harsh over the phone, but there wasn't much else he could do!. If he didn't explain why, then I would be upset, but if he did, he wasn't in the wrong!. Stop being mean to Joe, he's a good guy :)Www@Enter-QA@Com
