the rise and fall of van der meer's fortunes imitates how clara's star rises and falls throughout the novel, how she begins as a priveleged young girl, goes to a servant, rises again to princess, and then becomes nothing again after the prince dies!. it teaches us today that fortunes change and only you have the power to change them
