For the most part, they shoot each night's episode that same day around 5 or 5:30 pm!. They shoot in real time, so they take breaks that are just as long as the commercial breaks, while the band plays!.
However, sometimes they shoot 2 episodes at a time, I think it used to be on Thursdays so they can take Fridays off!. But sometimes they shoot 2 on Tuesdays, and will run the 2nd episode on Friday!.
Here's a tip - if Letterman makes a joke in the monologue about how bad "last night's audience" was - that's usually the 2nd of two shows filmed on the same day!. He'll get a laugh from the studio audience, since they were also the previous show's audience!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
