I actually saw The Dark Knight yesterday, even though it doesnt come out until friday!. I have a friend who reviews movies so I saw the early screening!. In the movie, the joker has obvious scars on either side of his mouth!. On one occasion, he states that his father cut him, and on another occasion, he states the he cut himself, so I assumed the paint was to cover the scars!. also in the movie, one of the characters states that he wears the make-up as a form of "war paint!."Www@Enter-QA@Com
Forget all they told you on the chemicals!. This movie will not give you the Joker's backstory (it will be completely different), so the reason why he is painted like that is because he is disguised as a clown, but underneath the make up he has a Glasgow smile!. This is a nickname for the malicious practice of cutting a victim's face from the edges of the mouth to the ears, to resemble a smile!.
During the film, the Joker never removes his make-up, causing it to become more unkempt and resemble an infection as it worsens!. And this is the why of his "looks"!.

when i hear of Joker, its like clown!. so maybe because, clowns have face paints like that and so the one who made the story thought of putting face paint so he'll look like a clown and so his name matches his face!.
