How did William Shatner become so fat?!

Question: How did the handsome, chiselled Captain Kirk turn into Jabba the Hutt?

Did he overeat?
Was he sick?
Did the fame get to him?

The new Star Trek movie would be so much cooler with a cameo by an aged Kirk, but in his current state? No I don't think so.

Before I get flamed for calling someone fat, look at him. He is. And yes I realise there could be a medical reason which is why I'm asking.

The answers I found here were quite eye opening--I still am quite fit and very trim even though I am older and don't reallly exercise much- never an issue--seems many have a perception that older equates -fat...so untrue..i would assume there was quite a bit of medication involved--especially since the episode with the death of his wife and his bout with depression--the medication that is most commonly perscribed for that, like seraquel and zyprexa, have a very bad side effect--- intense weight gain in a short period of time that is usually extremely difficult if not impossible to get rid of.

Well, the guy is around 75, so it's fairly hard to stay fit for most old people. He has a good excuse compared to K-Fed--or should I say K-OverFed.

He's gotten older (he's 77 now), and with most older folks his metabolism has slowed down. Add to that a rich lifestyle and its easy to see why he's gotten fat.

Also the reason he will not make a cameo - they killed off Captain Kirk in the "Star Trek: Generations" movie.

A lot of it has to do with the natural aging process. People just tend to get fatter as they get older. Also, Shatner played James T. Kirk 40 years ago when he was in his 30s. The man is now in his 70s, do you honestly think that he would look exactly the same? In my opinion, he looks pretty good for a man his age. Just look at the Rolling Stones, they're more than 10 years his junior, but they look like mummies.

Donuts and no exercise.
