Just about everything.
The singer's voice needs to be appealing to a wide audience. You don't want someone's voice to be all breathy like Britney's, or it'll only appeal to dance-pop fans. You don't someone's voice to be to grungy and rough, or it'll only appeal to some rock fans. Stuff like that. The singer should have a good range and also be able to sing their songs live.
When it comes to the melodies and whatnot, it should be catchy. Something that will have somebody singing it all day long. Same with beats. It should be catchy that people will be tapping to it for hours.
Lyrics are, of course, a very big factor to a good song. It needs to have a good story behind it. If it's a song about finding truth within themselves, that's great. If a song was written up because the writer was bored and the song is about booty-shaking, then FORGET IT. They shouldn't be straightfoward, like a song with lyrics like "I've got a crush on you, don't ever leave" etc..., but something like "'cause I'd rather waste my life pretending, then have to forget you for one whole minute". Lyrics that have a good story behind it but may confuse people a little bit (keep them guessing and stuff like that) are really good.
the producer pays to get the song on the radio station to see if its a hit. thats how the song and the band grows usually.
just to see if the band is able to get on the flow of the music industry-to see if people will like it basicaly
its what appeals to the listners mood, feelings, or thoughts
