Why did Jim Morrison call himself the lizard king?!

Question: He said, "I am the lizard king. I can do anything." Love him. But what was the significance for him, beyond his fascination with reptiles when he was a kid?

As much as people think that he only said things because he was on drugs, I think that most of the time Jim had reasoning behind what he was saying. I am not exactly sure why he called himself the Lizard King, but I have some theories on why he did that. Jim was very intelligent, and he was also very educated. In Jim's early college days (Florida State) he took some classes on media and journalism. Later on in an interview, (this was about the time that Morrison Hotel came out) Jim told the interviewer that he always had a secret meaning behind what he said. Jim said that he knew the things and types of phrases that journalists would put into print so he would subtly drop "gems" or phrases that he knew the interviewers could use and say over and over again. I think he called himself the Lizard King because it was something that the public could hold onto and remember, similar to how he described The Doors as "erotic politicians" If you think about it, we are still using these phrases today, so yes they did stick as he intended (at the beginning of his career)

he was on hallucinations

Jim Morrison was frequently high on a number of different drugs and he was in love with himself. He did and said many odd things during his career, and the Lizard King thing was one of many of them.

mabey the drugs had something to do with it. dunno.
