John is from East Kilbride, so he speaks in the Virgin commercial with his own Scottish accent.
In the 'Mummy' movies, his character, Jonathan, is an upper class Englishman.
Incidentally, when he shot the commercial, he was in the middle of the shoot for the third 'Mummy' movie, which is set in 1946, hence his hairstyle.
