The Sex pistols?!

Question: Were the Sex Pistols really as scary and influential as the media of the day portrayed them?
Or was Malcolm McLaren just a very clever and shrewd publicist?

True in one sense; but hilarious in another. This was the time when the press still wanted us to believe that Britain (especially England) was still 'swinging' - not as it was in the sixties, but swinging nonetheless and still respected. The Sex Pistols was summat the UK didn't want - the name for one was a bit creepy...but as the press do now, but with more shamelessness, they decide to jazz up the Pistols, with stories almost portraying them as sex offenders. They could have argued to the press...but as long as the press all acted like the Mail does today - the Sex Pistols would be laughing all the wat to the bank - as they finally did. Mr. McLaren may have had something to do with it...but not much, as he just wound up the press at the time, and watched them sneer for the next 4 years.

the answer is: both.
they were unique at the time, and i for one loved the way they inspired rage amongst bigots and old hippies alike.

both

No doubting the cleverness of Malcolm McLaren.

The argument was and remains, that Rock 'n' Roll is Bluecollar/Working Class and that it had been taken over by the Middle Classes since the death of the King. Time then to reclaim it back for the Common People. This is where the Sex Pistols and the whole Punk Generation came in.

The Sex Pistols took Rock 'n' Roll and shoved in yer face.

Long Live the King

Rock on.....

They were both scary AND influential...and MEMORABLE!

Being a former fan I'd suggest...

Malcolm McLaren just a very clever and shrewd publicist :)***

No, they were influential but to me they were a bunch of losers that sang crappy music to escape having a normal, real life. If you give me one good reason why punk music is good i will take back what i said. but to me punk music is just a bunch of grown men bitching for no good reason! I would hardly call punk rock music...

P.S. they called the Rock and Roll Hall of fame a piss stain. WTF!!!
