Perhaps because people feel that they don't have enough excitement in their own lives and need to gossip about others to fill that void.
People get bored with their own lives and turn to "important" people in our society like celebrities and politicians for their screw ups to entertain themselves.
the media always wants to break down celebrities and people are obsessed to see what's going to happen. it's sort of think when we see a car accident up the road, we have to stare in curiosity. it's human nature.
idk really but i think ppl like britney spears, paris hilton, etc.... just do stupid things for attention. like i guess they feel like at any moment they can be yesterday's news and ppl will forget about them, so they have to do crazy things in order to be memorable and constantly be in magazines and blahh...
